Price sensitivity is a reality grocers battle every day. But it’s also an opening. When shoppers watch every dollar, the experience they get in store is what keeps them coming back. That means every frontline worker needs what it takes to deliver on cleanliness, availability and service, every single day. One aisle, one shift, one associate at a time.

See what’s really driving grocery shopper loyalty in 2026

Grocery prices have gone up. So has the scrutiny shoppers apply to everything else about the experience.
The 2026 Grocery Consumer Survey asked 1,251 shoppers how rising prices are changing the way they shop, what they notice and what they’ll put up with. The result is a picture of a shopper who is watching every dollar—and, at the same time, watching every checkout line, empty shelf and interaction with store staff more closely than before.
Nearly half of respondents say they notice problems with the in-store experience more now than they did before prices rose.
Shoppers name price as the top factor in a good grocery experience, but price turns out not to be among the strongest statistical drivers of how they actually rate that experience. Quality and freshness, cleanliness, atmosphere, selection and frontline interactions carry more weight than price itself. Everyday friction points in a store (long lines, out-of-stocks, poor conditions, trouble getting help) now carry higher stakes than they used to.
The report also looks at what this means for loyalty. Most shoppers surveyed are already splitting their grocery spend across multiple stores in a typical month and a notable share have pulled back on a store they used to shop regularly—evidence that price alone is rarely the full reason someone leaves and that experience plays a real role in whether they come back.
